Of these, 6 studies met the inclusion criteria to be included for methodological assessment (108-110,115,125,126). Reasons for exclusion were as follows: ♦ Serrao et al (112) was excluded as they studied the effects of subarachnoid and epidural midazolam. ♦ Two studies (117,118) were excluded since they focused on diabetic polyneuropathy and intractable post-herpetic neuralgia. ♦ Buchner et al (120) was excluded as they evaluated only inpatients. ♦ Multiple evaluations (107,111,113,114,116,121124) were excluded for lack of evaluation of longterm outcomes. Methodological quality criteria are illustrated in Table 6 showing all the randomized clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of lumbar interlaminar epidural injections. Analysis of Efficacy Differences between Caudal and Lumbar Interlaminar Epidural Injections in Chronic Lumbar Axial Discogenic Pain: Local Anesthetic Alone vs. Local Combined with Steroids

STUDY DESIGN Comparative assessment of randomized controlled trials of caudal and lumbar interlaminar epidural injections in chronic lumbar discogenic pain. OBJECTIVE To assess the comparative efficacy of caudal and lumbar interlaminar approaches of epidural injections in managing axial or discogenic low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Epidural injections are commonly performed utiliz...

Lumbar interlaminar epidural injections are superior to caudal epidural injections in managing lumbar central spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND Epidural injections are performed to manage lumbar central spinal stenosis pain utilizing caudal, interlaminar, and transforaminal approaches. The literature on the efficacy of epidural injections in managing lumbar central spinal stenosis pain is sparse; lacking multiple, high quality randomized trials with long-term follow-up. METHODS Two randomized controlled trials of the cauda...

Efficacy of Epidural Injections in Managing Chronic Spinal Pain: A Best Evidence Synthesis.

BACKGROUND Epidural injections have been used since 1901 in managing low back pain and sciatica. Spinal pain, disability, health, and economic impact continue to increase, despite numerous modalities of interventions available in managing chronic spinal pain. Thus far, systematic reviews performed to assess the efficacy of epidural injections in managing chronic spinal pain have yielded conflic...

Comparison of the Efficacy of Caudal, Interlaminar, and Transforaminal Epidural Injections in Managing Lumbar Disc Herniation: Is One Method Superior to the Other?

BACKGROUND Epidural injections are performed utilizing 3 approaches in the lumbar spine: caudal, interlaminar, and transforaminal. The literature on the efficacy of epidural injections has been sporadic. There are few high-quality randomized trials performed under fluoroscopy in managing disc herniation that have a long-term follow-up and appropriate outcome parameters. There is also a lack of ...

Dispersal Pattern of Injectate after Lumbar Interlaminar Epidural Spinal Injection Evaluated with Computerized Tomography

Study Design Retrospective analysis of lumbar computed tomographic epidurograms. Objective To evaluate the dispersal pattern of injectate after interlaminar lumbar epidural steroid injections. Summary Prior studies have evaluated the dispersal patterns of injectate after lumbar epidural steroid injections using fluoroscopy with varying results. To date, there have been no studies evaluating the...

Efficacy of Epidural Injections in the Treatment of Lumbar Central Spinal Stenosis: A Systematic Review

CONTEXT Lumbar central spinal stenosis is common and often results in chronic persistent pain and disability, which can lead to multiple interventions. After the failure of conservative treatment, either surgical or nonsurgical modalities such as epidural injections are contemplated in the management of lumbar spinal stenosis. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Recent randomized trials, systematic reviews ...
